for public, private, and home schools. Programs can be tailored to

Storytime ~ Grades
Pre-K-2 Students enjoy a storybook reading and activities with a costumed storyteller. Assorted themes available including Pirate Adventure and Life at Sea. Time: 30-45 minutes
Shipwrecks and Ghost
Lore ~ Grades 3-12 * Students will learn about local history and ways of life through stories of local shipwrecks, witches, pirates, and ghosts, and have a chance to share their own spooky tales in a short story composition. Time: 45-60 minutes
Storm Warriors Travel Trunk ~ Grades 4-6
*** Students will learn about life in post-Civil War America through the storm warriorseyes of a young African American boy in Storm Warriors. Nathan and his family are driven from their home by the KKK and move to the Outer Banks, where they meet the Pea Island Surfmen. Students will learn about the Life-Saving Service and the harsh realities of life at the end of the 19th century. During this lesson, students will discuss their recognition and opinions of this inequality, and how it came about in regards to slavery and the Civil War, most specifically during the period of Reconstruction. Students will explore life on the coast of North Carolina, and the importance of the ocean to not only local livelihoods, but the shipping industry as well. The learning activities will require students to define important vocabulary using context clues as well as available resources such as printed and online dictionaries, answer questions and engage in class discussion to promote reading comprehension and analysis of the text. form. Rental period: 3 weeks Economics & Geography of a Shipwreck (Elementary
School Version) ~ Grades 3-5 ** Students will map origins and destinations of local shipwrecks, examine samples of their cargoes, and listen to their rescue stories to analyze the economic decision-making of sailors and entrepreneurs. Time: 45 minutes Economics of a Shipwreck ~ Grades 8-12 ** Students will analyze shipwreck records and other primary sources to understand the economic factors that lured sailors and businessmen to risk treacherous voyages across the sea. Students will roleplay to evaluate the individual motives driving the trans-Atlantic trade in the late 19th Century. Can be combined with Economics of a Shipwreck. Time: 60-90 minutes Geography of a Shipwreck ~ Grades 8-12 ** Students will work in small groups to analyze records and primary sources related to a particular shipwreck and map the origins and destinations of cargoes. Students will share their research with the class and evaluate how trade changes global relationships and compare global relationships today. Can be combined with Economics of a Shipwreck. Time: 60-90 minutes
