TOWER CAM

(Year-Round)

TOWER CAM, the museum’s interactive exhibit, allows visitors the same view of the ocean and beach that the Surfmen had from the tower. A touch screen computer system, video monitor and video camera mounted on the Station’s tower let visitors identify the many vessels that visit the port of Hampton Roads. Museum Upper Gallery. STORY TIME WITH CAPTAIN FISHBONES!

(Year-Round)

Join Captain Fishbones for a storybook reading, activities and fun! For ages 3-9, must be accompanied by an adult. Program included in regular museum admission. Held on selected Wednesdays of every month from September through May. Held on every Wednesday during June, July and August. 11:00 a.m. Please call to confirm time and date. Reservations appreciated. A DAY AT THE BEACH

November 17, 2009 - January 17, 2010

Vintage photographic images of families enjoying the beach during the late 1800s up to 1960.  Includes a 3-D display, “Beachcombing Treasures.”  Museum Lower Gallery.

 

African-Americans in the Coast Guard

January 19 – February 28, 2010

A pictorial exhibit honoring the history of the lives and service of African- Americans in the United States Coast Guard with selected showings of the film “The Voice of Gladdened Hearts.” Produced by the US Coast Guard and narrated by James Earl Jones, the film takes a look at the all-black crew of Pea Island Life-Saving Station on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Dames At Sea 3
March 2 – April 18, 2010

An exhibit featuring original artwork with maritime themes by Virginia Beach female artists. Dames At Sea 3 is curated in conjunction with MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in Arts. All art is available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds to benefit the Old Coast Guard Station.
  

Women in the Coast Guard

April 20 – June 29

Whether in a supporting role or blazing new trails, women have always played an important role in the history of the Coast Guard and its predecessors. Highlights include famous female lighthouse keepers and the SPAR’s of WWII.

Surf’s Up!

July 1 – September 6
In 1912 the first surfer hit the waves off Virginia Beach. Ever since, Virginia Beach has been a major site in East Coast surfing. This collection of photographs and other memorabilia chronicles that history. Highlights include local surfing legends, surf shops, the making of a surfboard, and competitions.

The Legendary Lynnhaven Oyster

September 8 – October 31

“The ‘best oysters in the world’ are caught in the Lynnhaven River.” (Harrison Burton, Norfolk Virginian, 1877.) In the past 100 years, the population of the native Virginia oyster has fallen dramatically, due to over-harvesting, disease and poor water quality. This exhibit, made possible by a partnership between the Old Coast Guard Station and Lynnhaven River NOW, looks at the history and restoration of this legendary species.

From Sea to Shinning Sea

November 2, 2010 – January 4, 2011

In 1807, the Coast Survey was charged by Thomas Jefferson to provide a “complete and accurate chart of every part of the coasts” of the United States. On display are twenty posters produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, which explore the Coast Survey’s history, accomplishments, and scientific contributions. Richly illustrated with photos, charts, and artwork held in the Survey’s archives.
